    I'm in zone 7a, Massachusetts. I'm getting my seed growing space setup and will start my onions in January. I'm also using my big 2nd floor balcony with grow bags, Earthbox planters, and 5gal buckets. Starting small, then God willing, in '26' planting in my back yard and driveway. You inspire me and crack me up. I'm laughing with you because I can relate. 😅 I just put in an order from Baker Creek Seeds, but I'm also planning to save seeds. Blessing😊

    I grow sweet spanish every year they get decent sized but I do start the seeds in January for planting in May ish…… I highly recommend giving hair cuts remember each leaf represents a layer in the onion. Zone 5b Wyoming

    Make sure you pick onion varieties that grow well in your onion growing zone, which is different your regular growing zone. Long day vs intermediate day vs short day. Before I knew about the onion growing zones, I was picking the wrong varieties, mostly because Lowe’s sells seeds to us with no concern as to whether they will grow in the onion zone we live in. For example, Lowe’s sells Texas Grano in PA, even though the onions grow better in the short day zone (most southern onion zone) and we are located in the long day onion zone. They never grew bigger than a golf ball. Now that I plant only Intermediate onion zone onions, I am having better success with growing bigger onions. Google your onion growing zone.

    I had to learn about day length the hard way…don’t know why local stores sell onions you can’t successfully grow in my area. The further north you are, you need long day. The further south (in the northern hemisphere) you plant short day. Some in the mid zone can plant both and intermediate day. Pretty sure that’s how it works at least 🫠Check out a chart online and you’ll see where in the US the lines are drawn.

    PS Love the braids. Can’t wait to see what you choose.

    I am gonna try this winter to really get my act together when it comes to planting my seeds and germinating more of my own stuff again for next year. I am always so late when it comes to spring gardening. I love your hair it looks so good.

    Asia, please share the portable greenhouse you’re considering. You’re so on the ball with seeds… I’m planning to do some starts this year. I’m surprised you can use LED bulbs to start seeds… no heat or UVAUVB rays? I love that you use your fingernails to plant the seeds!😆 I’d like to plant out onions (no back yard) I wonder if the deer and/or gophers would eat them?
