It is no secret that I’m a bit of a japan-head. I enjoy consuming japanese content, from films to books to tv and music, it’s something about a certain type of japanese content that just vibrates on the same frequency as me, ever since i was a kid actually. And it’s the calming, moody, atmospheric, foggy, rainy, cicada-sounding, beautifully subtle and simple and paired back and complex type of content. I’m not a fan of the metal and techno or the sugary sweet more over the top tv dramas. I want quiet, calm, sophisticated and elegant stuff. The aesthetics, that’s what I’m after. Okay we have lots to discuss, so let’s get to it.
I talk about:
– my favourite films
– my favourite tv shows
– my favourite books
– hayao miyazaki
– the japanese mood
– studio ghibli
– realist animated films

Hi Jenny, I watched your video and I am wondering where can I watch your Japanese movies, thank you
“Japan-head” – anything to not face the terrible, awful truth: you’re a weeb.
Awe, I love you so much more for your appreciation of Japanse & Zen culture
Oh man, you like those violent anime/movies that I will not watch these days (but have seen). Samurai Fiction you may like. I have seen all of the films you mentioned and all but one of the anime (the journey to Agartha). . I too have seen all the Ghibli films. The Boy and the Heron was excellent. You'll love it. There are some interesting parakeet characters in it, but hey, it adds to the story…
All the old Kurasawa films are great. I love all the movies like "Spring Story" and such too. Old Japanese films move me more than a lot of the newer ones. I haven't seen many new ones since maybe 15 years ago though.
I have read Convenience Store Woman. I love Gail Tsukiyama books, especially my favorite of hers The Samurai's Garden. Be With You by Takuji Ichikawa was really unique. Otherwise, I love all the "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" books that have been written. The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa was so good and I am not a cat person. Last year I read Durian Sukegawa's "Sweet Bean Paste" that had such great characters.
I found out about Terrace House from your podcast when you started it. I loved that show and am so sad that it had to stop (but I understand why). Have you seen "Love Village" (another Japanese reality show but with people who are in their late 30s/40s trying to live together and find people to date, etc)? I haven't seen it yet.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the best anime of all time for sure. It should be in everyone's top 3. I can't do Attack on Titan. I watched some of it but it is so depressing and violent. My husband watched it all. I have been a Sailor Moon watcher since 1994 when they played it at 5:30 AM here 4 years before "Toonami" was a thing on Cartoon Network when anime started booming here at least (played when kids got home from school). Armitage III (Polymatrix) is my favorite anime movie. I first saw anime in the late 1980s when my brothers rented and watched Vampire Hunter D (they are 70s babies and I am an '83 baby). I have seen hundreds of anime since..Honey and Clover is a good story (kinda reminds me of how Terrace House went at times). Did you watch the Violet Evergarden show/movies? I actually prefer the romantic types of anime so I won't go listing those really, since you seem more into the gore and action types.
I can‘t believe you didn‘t mention the film ‚Perfect Days‘ (2023)! This film perfectly pictures so many things I love about Japan 🥰
I really enjoyed Love is blind Japan. It's a shame it got cancelled after one season
Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are my faves for ever ^_^
Besides the ones you mentioned, which I love too, the Japanese series Last Exile is so good!
Great video ✨✨✨
One of the movies I'd recommend is Still Walking (歩いても 歩いても)
This was excellent. Need to watch again to take notes of recommendations. Thank you, Jenny.
Yes, Sailor Moon was my entire identity growing up! And I also love Peaceful Cuisine! Been watching his YT for over 10 yrs now!
Kill La Kill anime show ♥️
Uuu love this topic! One of the best realistic animated films in my opinion is grave of the fireflies, but it’s also so sad, I haven’t watched it in years. I will definitely watch some of your recommendations.
Anpanman is a great anime for beginners, there is also an OVA where they learn hiragana and play a game of shiritori with what they learn
I also mention ginga nagareboshi gin, it’s the first anime that I ever saw and I was a small child. 😂 obviously the cut (and dubbed) version, it was in the childrens’ library section and my dad borrowed it for me and I fell in love. Obviously the Finnish dubs are horrible, but they were fine for me as a child. Obviously got my hands on the uncut japanese version later 😄
Delicious in dungeon
More than your run of the mill adventure anime, the premise is refreshing, characters interesting and layered, oh and yes super delicious looking 🤤
Frieren: beyond journeys end is also an unexpected knock out this year
Karekano. It’s a 90’s love story anime (24 episodes) from same director of Evangelion
Thank you for this video Jenny! I am a Japanese living in London! I love Spritrd away, Totoro, Mononoke, and the rest of Ghibli (I grew up watching them all the classics❤), Kamome shokudo, Shall we dance, Don't stop the camera, Senset on the 3rd street, Happiness of the Katakuris! Twilight Samurai, Yu wo wakasu hodo no atsui ai! Manbiki family, korekore hibi koujitu!TV show midnight diner!
Omg I love Yoshimoto Banans since I was a teen!! Kitchen is a must! Soseki Natsume's ten dreams! And kokoro! Abe kobo's a woman in dune! The list goes on…😂 Thank you again Jenny! Sending you love xx
I am curious if you are a fan of any particular Japanese stationary items. 🙈
from the first diet video I watched in your channel I just knew it! (don't ask me why 😂) you're a japan lover too, thank you so much for the recommendations! I even recognized some actress along the movie's parts you showed.
btw, I highly recommend "the faces of ito" it is in netflix and it's a short serie, it's realistic and helped me to think about how I usually treat my love interests, besides it shows the complexity of each character, I just love it!
again, thank youu

It's not a film but a series called "Princess Jellyfish" based off a manga. It's weird but really endearing. A film series I love is Nodame Cantabile. It's a bit dated but the music, the quirkiness is really hard to replicate.
Garden of the Words is the most mesmoriazing anime. I don like rain BUT I LOVE IT IN THIS ANIME!
MOVIES: All by Kore-Eda movie producer;
YES Departures is sooo underated! I know no one who likes it.
.
.
Suggestions: Anime 86-Eighty Six, Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu,
Detta skulle kräva mycket eftertanke för att svara på detta.. Jag kanske kan och borde göra det, men det tar mig typ två timmar..
My absolute favorite Japanese novel is The Box Man from Abe Kobo, big classic. It makes me want to go homeless. 😛 And one really really classy retro anime from the 1970s that I think is grossly underrated outside of Asia Is the Rose of Versailles (in Japan and Taiwan every lady in their 40-50s had a crush on Lady Oscar) it is the kind of anime that you will see from a different main characters perspective every single time you rewatch it! Can't recommend it enough.
A few films I recommend: Sweet Bean, also Tokyo Story, and Grave of the Fireflies. ♥️
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) anime is my absolute favorite. The soundtrack, the cicadas, the bittersweet story. Totally captures that feeling you're describing.
Thanks for the recommendations.
I cannot recommend Violet Evergarden enough! The movies are good, but the show is still my absolute all time favorite. From your recommendations, I can with good confidence tell you that you would fall in love with it. Deeply beautiful and emotional. Just thinking about it makes me want to watch it all over again!
no mention of little forest?
Cowboy Bebop, above all! ❤️
Your recommendations reminded me about my time at Uni studying Japanese language and literature and then my time living in Tokyo ❤ thank you
I love the way you put things into words, exactly explains how I felt about those movies.
Porco Rosso isn’t my favourite, but I find it misunderstood and underappreciated. Especially during these times, the political messages in it are very important. Fight against facism all the way!
Best animated film will always be Princess Mononke for me, saw it in a theater when I was 9 and it has shaped me and still moves me deeply, but when ever I need a film that will instantly comfort me I watch Spirited Away.
When it comes to non-animation films I highly recommend Kamikaze Girls (Shimotsuma Monogatari). It’s funny and cool, it’s about an unlikely friendship between a Lolita and a Yankee, but you can also look at it as a love story, definately. So cute and weird.
