One of my nearby neighbors cut down their American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) tree. I don’t know why they did, but I would guess it had to do with the ridiculous amount of fruit it dropped each year! I would stop by a few times each fall to grab a bunch off of the sidewalk, but I guess they got tired of cleaning up after it.

Luckily, maybe because of wildlife, many seeds ended up in an overgrown area across the street, where they were allowed to grow into a nice persimmon patch! Thankfully this patch wasn’t destroyed when the area was recently bulldozed for construction, so each year I visit the patch to collect fruit!

  1. Ill nvr understand why people cut down trees that sustain us with food, and kill "weeds" that are edible with health benefits. Then they go shop at the grocery store for the very same foods thatve been sprayed with chemicals and preservatives, smh.

  2. I've got a few wild patches near me that I collect fruit from every year but even super ripe they're very astringent 😢. I've found that freezing them or soaking them multiple times helps a bit but if anyone has any tips for more easily removing the astringency I'd love to know!

  3. American wild persimmons are so good. Had them in the yard in he house where i grew up and the new owners also got rid of them.

  4. I have a question, how do tornadoes impact the environment? Like if a tornado goes through a forest and knocks a ton of trees down how does the environment benefit?

  5. My mom never appreciates wildlife even though we have a garden. In her mind, gardening simply means growing the one vegetables or fruit we want to eat and killing absolutely everything else.
She accuses me of being 'lazy' for letting the bees and worms and beetles roam around instead of checking every leaf and squashing them all day every day. And she also accuses me of intentionally leaving some fruits and flowers for them.
At this point IDK if she knows how nature works.

  6. I heard that is a difficult plant to grow. I have a friend that has struggled 30 years to grow one and only has ones she found in the wild and moved to her yard. Even then they don’t always make it.

  7. If you're planting persimmon seeds, they need to go through a cold process, so refrigerate them for a couple months.
