It’s been a diverse week here at my Old Stone House in Portugal. I have painted the rendered wall in the Old Stone Kitchen Tiny House Project and decided to get creative in the garden with some of the granite stones. It’s also Olive harvest time and although I am not harvesting all my olives this year the trees still need pruning.

Hi, I’m Suzi a 50 plus solo woman who has made roots in Monsanto, Central Portugal where I am currently renovating what was an abandonned stone house and land into my dream off-grid homestead. I share new episodes documenting my projects and life here in Portugal every Sunday and I’d love you along for the journey. I have no idea what I am doing really but I learn by trying.

  1. Super ye olde kitchen progress with the base layer painted on the newly plastered wall. Plenty of joy from you shines through in your hard work in the gardens xxx

  2. Do they have gardenias in Portugal? They’re small shrubs and when they flower the smell is gorgeous. I think scented flowers are perfect for entryways as guest are greeted with beautiful perfumes when they come to visit

  3. eu plantaria bolbos, narcisos, gladíolos, dálias, fresias, tulipas, crocus existem bolbos de outono, de inverno da primavera, iria ter flores até ao verão

  4. some granadilla to grow on the fence, they have the most beautiful flowers and they provide food maybe even grape vines. When planting under an olive tree consider water needs and harvest accessibility. 🌱 Lavender and rosemary boost pollination and deter pests for Olive Trees.

🌼 Marigolds and chives protect Olive Trees with color and pest control.

🌿 Comfrey and thyme improve soil health and structure around Olive Trees.

  5. Bom dia! I think that which ever plants, flowers or herbs you choose to plant near the olive tree, should be in medium/ large pots (vases?), so that you can move them, when you need to harvest the olives.
    On another subject:
When it comes to food which is in good condition, such as your olives, if you don't want to pick them all, or simply don't need them, why not just offer them to your neighbours (they would pick the olives themselves and be grateful to you), or someone you like, that needs them, specially considering the price of olive oil?!
    There's always someone in need…
Regards and good luck with your project!

  7. I would plant something that will help to stabilise the soil and prevent it from eroding. Some form of low growing shrub that's drought resistant and native to the area, e.g. quote, "Thymus carnosus It is a woody, upright perennial to 41 cm (16 in) tall, with clusters of fleshy, oval, light green to grey-green leaves, furry on their undersides. Its white, lilac, or pink flowers are borne on 41 cm (16 in) spikes and are protected by oval green bracts." Or something similar. ❤

  8. I know you were planning to walk the Pilgrim's Way there have been some attacks on women walking alone please consider walking with a group.

  9. For the coming winter and spring crocus blue bells tulips daffodils and some low grown lavender the only thing with lavender you need to trim it often or it will come very leggy and have bare patches.

  10. Suzy, love the stone boarder. Does Portugal have day lilies? I agree with lavender, marigolds, daisies, rosemary, geraniums, zinnias, and cosmos. I would put as much color as possible since you can see it through your door way. It will be beautiful whatever you decide.

  11. You always busy the wall looking great so neat and watching this area herbs will have a light aroma and useful for cooking with fresh vegetables good luck with your projects keep improving your house nice olive time to prune before winter bye

  12. If you are going to be harvesting your olives off this tree you will need to put something that laying your nets over then
M and having olives dropping on them are not going to ruin the plants.
