The Government has rowed back on making it illegal to smoke in pub beer gardens, as Health Secretary Wes Streeting says vaping and smoking in playgrounds and outside schools could be banned.

Wes Streeting said the hospitality industry has “taken a real battering in recent years” and it is not “the right time” to ban smoking outside pubs, as was reported earlier this year.

He said, however, that smoking and vaping could be banned in other public places in England under the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, being introduced to Parliament on Tuesday.

In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, it is already an offence to smoke on NHS hospital grounds. The new plans would see this also introduced in England.

Mr Streeting told LBC Radio the Bill will help “clamp down on the scourge of youth vaping”.

He said: “We’re also proposing to regulate vapes – vaping outside schools and playgrounds – as part of a wider package to clamp down on the scourge of youth vaping, which will include licensing for retailers, enforcement and also clamping down on the marketing and vaping and advertising and packaging and flavours of vapes to kids.

“Taken together, I think this is a sensible package to tackle what is still one of Britain’s biggest killers on smoking, but also to clamp down on the scourge of use of vaping.”

  1. Thank god, British pubs are facing extinction as they are since 2007 when the real smoking ban was launched and even more after COVID.

  2. Thank goodness! I’ve never smoked however I drink & even I don’t agree with banning this. Leave the poor boggars alone ffs

  3. It's the best idea so far , people have the right to smoke and kill themselves or harm their bodies in their homes but public places should be protected for those who are currently forced to inhale other potion others smoke causing innocent people health issues .

This should had been done decades ago just as other countries have clamped down on harmful smoking being the norm .

Freedom of choice should not include being at the expense of other people's health who do not smoke.

Smoking related health conditions caused by those who choice to smoke should be charged Instead of the ngs paying for it . If a person can afford to buy cigarettes or vapes they can afford to pay towards their health conditions caused by smoking .

It's a choice and why is their choices being w forced on non snokers who shouldn't be forced to breath in the toxic poison of others

  4. I go to pubs less and less because of smoking. And since many smokers are youngsters who don't drink or spend money in pubs, good luck!

  5. People who thought this was a good idea are very selfish when they can sit anywhere when smokers can’t.
They can’t see the real reason for it and probably still think Axel is a Welsh Christian and the bloke in Edinburgh was hit by a bus

  6. Dumbest sh*t I ever heard you can’t make this up it’s a sinking ship trying grab and scavenge anything with the most ridiculous measures

  7. Burden on the nhs, stop importing people. Who have no right to free medical treatment in the uk, and are a drain on the economy.

  8. Smoking costs the NHS directly 2.5billion per year smoker pay 12billion in tax straight to the government every year basically x5 what they cost. Turns out the government don't like smokers taking cigarett breaks at work as they added that onto what it costs the NHS. But here's an even crazier one obesity in this country costs the NHS alone an estimated £19billion pounds every year and they pay no special tax for the privilege. How about we deal with the actual big issue and when I say big I'm not joking.

  9. They done this because our president Trump won. Starmer free our Tommy and all the innocent people our British comrades from your evil policies. Free our britain and bring back democracies and peoples liberties you have single handedly taken from all our civil rights.

  10. Do it and the government will lose hundreds of millions every year on the tax they earn from booze and cigarettes….ooh ive changed my mind, carry on guys.
