John from http://www.growingyourgreens.com/ shares his experience surviving 110 days of 100+ degree heat in his garden. Discover the shocking results of what happened to his plants during this extreme heatwave and learn the simple tips and tricks he used to keep his garden thriving through the brutal summer temperatures!
In this episode, you will learn how to overcome extreme heat in your garden and successfully grow food even in the harshest conditions. John shares his experience of managing a vegetable garden in Las Vegas, where temperatures soared above 100°F for over 110 consecutive days. He dives deep into what it takes to keep plants alive and thriving under such extreme heat. While some plants couldn’t withstand the intense conditions, others not only survived but flourished beyond expectations. You’ll gain insights into the crops that can handle extreme weather and how you can grow them in your own garden, even if you face similar challenges.
Throughout the video, John highlights the extraordinary growth of heat-tolerant plants, such as water spinach, Egyptian spinach, Jerusalem artichokes, and sweet potatoes. These crops demonstrated resilience by growing to impressive heights, with some towering over 12 feet. You’ll see how John nurtured these plants through the scorching summer, using techniques like proper seed preparation, strategic planting, and clipping vines for optimal growth. This episode emphasizes that even in record-breaking heat, you can still harvest an abundance of food if you know which crops thrive under such conditions.
John also touches on the difficulties faced when trying to plant a fall and winter garden while dealing with the persistent heat. He explains how the prolonged hot temperatures delayed his ability to establish cooler-season crops like lettuce and kale, but despite this setback, he found ways to ensure continued growth. By selecting the right plants and using thoughtful methods to protect them from the elements, John provides practical strategies that you can apply to your own garden, ensuring food production even when the weather seems too extreme.
By the end of this episode, you will feel inspired and empowered to adapt your gardening techniques to whatever climate you live in. John encourages you not to let harsh weather conditions discourage you from growing your own food. With the right plant selection and care, it’s possible to turn your garden into a productive space, no matter the temperature. John’s journey is a testament to learning, adapting, and pushing through challenges, and he hopes this episode motivates you to do the same in your garden.

No one is saying climate doesn't change, but to trust governments that say more tax money will fix it while they spend trillions bombing other countries and paying for wars like the one in ukraine. It's all BS. They don't care. Flying in there jets as they tell us to buy electric as they destroy forests for minerals for the batteries. Wake up people.

GrowingYourGreens single-handedly kept the temps down about another 1-2 degrees just from his property alone! 🙂 Seriously though, hopefully people in his area are looking at this as a great example for what is desperately needed around their properties (across the U.S.). The plants that seemed to like my "heat" (relative compared to people out west) were Taiwanese yardlong beans, sweet potatoes (like the video but mine grew along the ground), passionflower (explosive in growth though…but doesn't create a lot of jam from the fruit), and fig trees. There are so many options even if you weren't into every veg in his video. Overall, great stuff in this video to consider as my own zone seems to get warmer. Thanks!
Wow! 120 F* that is super hot. It is a crazy record. Date trees love it.
I’m done planting vegetables outside. Too many variables. Pests, wind, temperature, soil containments. I’m all greenhouse hydroponic now🐸🍺🔪🔥
I was AMAZED at how well and how many sweet potatoes that grew for me in a 15 gallon grow bag sitting in the blazing sun in a south facing courtyard completely fenced in! When it was 93 degrees in the yard, it was 115 in the courtyard. I started them with two sprouted organic potatoes I got from the grocery store and barely watered them. I planted the four halfs just beneath the surface of the soil and covered them with about 4 inches of straw and pretty much all but ignored them…. and yet the leaves grew like crazy covering the pathways in the courtyard. I just harvested them and one of the potatoes was over 3 lbs with 8 pounds worth altogether. I could have left them alone and waited to harvest them to let the smaller ones keep growing as only a few of the leaves were dying but I certainly didn't want the big one getting any bigger. I'm in growing zone 8B SC.
I would LOVE to grow a tree with leaves that taste like lettuce here.

How did your moringa do?
Loving your Chanel!
Just to be scientifically correct, by Newtons law, energy cannot be created. Perhaps you mean harvested? Also photosynthesis is performed, it is an existing process 😉 I don’t mean to be annoying, just helping you to be scientifically on point 😘
