It’s been a while since we’ve grown pumpkins (winter squash). What a rewarding crop it is with no maintenance required after planting. This year we tried out a new variety called Turks turban as well as our old staple the Japanese Uchiki Kuri. Take a look the new and old harvest videos.

  1. Lovely pumpkin harvest, thanks for showing it! We want to do the same next year, so good to see how you set it up, love me some pumpkins. 😃

  2. I grew both of those myself. The turks turban has good flavour also but its harder to cut compared to uchiki kuri. Those marrows should be brought inside now & keep them for a month on the kitchen bench before getting the seeds out. I wonder though, since you grew uchiki kuri, turks turban & courgette. They are all in the same family & if they are all in the same sub species eg circubita maxima they may have cross pollinated. You might end up with a mix of all 3, or a hybrid of uchiki & turks turban. Could be an interesting mix. I always save seeds from pumpkins, if they cross pollinated you can end up with some really interesting mixes. But if uchiki kuri is a different species then it will not cross. Only way to find out is to plant the seeds lol.

  3. Also, I'm not sure if you make bread but you can make a great loaf of bread with pumpkin. Take the uchiki kuri & roast or steam it, then mash into a puree. Mix equal parts pumpkin with flour, eg 300g flour, 300g pumpkin, some salt & yeast, along with some water to bind. Leave to rise overnight, then in the morning shape into a round or throw into a loaf tin. Once risen bake it for about 35 mins. It makes an actual loaf of bread instead of the usual pumpkin bread which is more like cake with sugar. You can also make them into flatbreads & cook them in a non stick frying pan instead.
