This is a beautiful yard. We have beautiful redwoods next door. The roots are awful. They are all over in my raised garden beds and in ground beds.
Janey, that pool would be amazing in your back yard when you're ready to "take the plunge", with your greenhouse positioned at the far end, much like this building at the far end of their pool. Michael Glassman's attention to detail, interest in determining exactly what's going to work for his clients' longterm enjoyment of their yards, and unbridled enthusiasm always makes every one of us wish he was also our personal friend! We can't get enough of him! Those lightboxes are beyond beautiful!

I love Nandina they are so easy care. You can prune or not they’re totally fine. and with ours here in NZ (not sure if other places) you can change the color with fertilising. they stay more green even lime/chartreuse with fertiliser or if you want the autumnal reds and dark oranges leave them alone. one of my favourites. a row of Nandina and coleonema (breath of heaven) as a mixed border is my go to for easy care beauty. would be good in your best for the west garden too. 😀
