In todays episode I show you how to keep your garden going through autumn and winter. Those close and hard months in the garden, aren’t all doom and gloom. I show you how to grow vegetables through autumn and winter. From kale’s to cabbages, onions, garlic and much much more.

I also measure out the new polytunnel area that’s being kindly supplied by @polytunnels . They will be arriving in about 2 weeks to build the polytunnel and it’s HUGE! I mark out the two possible places using red and yellow ribbon, explaining the pros and cons to both direction. It’s going to take up a huge chunk of the garden, however the space isn’t lost, it’s just a more controlled environment to grow in. With extra heat and controlled watering. I also show you the garden in autumn, it’s now time to clear beds; mulch, compost old foliage for a nutrient compost next year. Which will eventually return back to the beds as a mulch.

I also show you what happens when a cabbage goes to flower, to produce seed.

Here comes autumn!

  1. Last week I discussed moving the greenhouse to the fig and olive plot before the tunnel arrives… so it won't be shaded. Danny 🌱

  2. If you're moving the greenhouse… could you move the polytunnel back more? That way you should still have your beds and uses some of that space that is shaded by the tree… I'm assuming the cover of the poly will help diffuse the light and make it bright and warm inside still?

  3. The polytunnnel will be brilliant and its huge so will be a great space when the weather gets worse in the winter and autumn. Only a few weeks until it arrives but I think the yellow option is the best

  4. I love this time of year, planning for next year and marking layouts like this is one of my favourite things. Exciting times on your plots. That tunnel will soon seem small though 😂
The way the weather is going it might be worth putting all the plot under cover 😱
    Cheers, Andy ✊🌱🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

  5. I had a lot of bindweed on my plot when I took it on last year. The best thing I did was to bag it all up and wait for it to turn into compost which I reapplied onto my beds this year. Still digging it up in patches though but it has reduced considerably and turning it into compost for next year. I know what it’s like, you have to be in the right frame-of-mind to tackle these jobs. Good luck and all the best. 👍

  6. Good idea with the tape Danny, it will all look amazing in the end whichever way you decide to do it you always have an impressive plot. Hope you enjoyed malvern x

  7. I would put it where the old shed is as it might fit there and put the new pond next to it to get fresh rainwater off it every day.

  8. Yes the yellow one , bring over the fruit cage and green house on the Fig & Olive plot , then you can have the shed where the greenhouse is now . A lot of work but by the spring it’s going to be fabulous . Thanks for another educational video 👍

  9. I love how much you plan. I'd be like erm, stick it there?? 🤷‍♀️ 😂😂 Did you get your garlic from Malvern? Aw poor leeks. But needs must!! Onwards!

  10. Oh Danny its all getting so exciting! Although I did wonder if you were hinting at what you're thinking of growing in the polytunnel when you brought the 'red, gold and green' ribbon out 🤪🤣(just joking!!😉)
Autumn is such a mixed emotion kinda month isn't it. The beds emptying and being prepared to sleep, but all the plans for the next year's changes and improvements.
Have a great week ahead xxx

  11. I think the yellow line position is better. You won’t lose as many beds and I think it’ll look nice in that position. Those sprouts look great 👍 exciting times ahead.

  12. Really enjoying your vids but can I suggest you put the month somewhere in the title because especially once they get past a year old we have no idea what month it is. For me , a new allotment holder month by month planing is really helpful 😁

  13. Seems like behind the poly tunnel will be a waste of space. I wouldn’t put your potting shed behind there, you’d probably feel very isolated. And…you’d have no view. I’d put your potting shed where the wreck of a shed is right now, remove the greenhouse, pull out the fruit trees, put the poly tunnel further back and lastly put the fruit cage on the fig and olive plot. Yup..lol…sounds about right. lol.

  14. It's all looking great, Danny. The yellow option might mean a cooler/shadier side to the polytunnel by the hedge. Does the red option have the sun on one side in the morning and the other in the evening? It might be more balanced for light. Mine has a south and north side, and the south definitely does better. I can see why the yellow is more appealing, though. Whatever you decide will be grand—it's going to be huge.

  15. Omg those poor apples 🍎.

It’s important to take in consideration the winds and the sun angles and laying it out is a great idea. But make sure you keep all the tree branches away as they will move in the winds too.

Happy growing and sowing in that barn sized poly, Ali 🌞🥶🇨🇦

  16. I am sure everyone is as excited as you about this poly tunnel, Danny!! Your excitement is infectious. You are going to love it and I love listening to all of your plans 😊 Lovely to meet you at Malvern and look forward to following on your journey moving forward 😊🪴💚
