Was that steam coming off the mulch or dust?
A nice big pile of woodchips will be hot in the middle (to the point where you’ll burn yourself if you stick you hand in it). The microbes create heat (140°F) as they begin decomposing the organic matter. When you dig in it and expose the insides to the cool air, it gives off lots of steam.
Thank you! I’ve been trying to to just throw some flower seed down on top of some mulch, thinking they would just fall through or otherwise root and pull themselves down 😅 I’ll have to do it this way and hopefully next spring we’ll have some new flowers under our tree 😁
