Expanding my landscape on a budget has been my motto for the whole year. And now is a wonderful time of year for it, because Fall is for planting!

I am working on the area of my garden I lovingly refer to as my “island of misfit toys” – an area that has been made up of divided perennials, transplanted plants and flowers, and free plants from garden sharing. I have azaleas, canna lilies, Drift roses and more in this area.

My name is Nicole Roggeman and My Carolina Garden is located in coastal North Carolina, in growing zone 8B. I hope you enjoy the expansion of my garden, and my garden maintenance! 1. That is crazy about the cosmos! I scattered one pack of seeds around my garden in the backyard and I think every seed germinated and bloomed throughout spring and summer. I even had some reseed and are just now starting to put on blooms. As far as zinnia seeds go, go to the dollar tree and get the 4 for $1 packs. I think those germinated better than the ones I paid good money for.
Can't wait to see what your weed/tree turns out to be 😀 Those are always exciting. I love the agave plants, I don't have any yet. I'll have to really amend my heavy clay soil before planting them but they are on my wish list. The outside garden area is really coming together and those red azaleas are beautiful in there.

  2. Hi Nicole, love the island of misfits! It is a wonderful idea! Wish I had a place for my misfits…The fall azalea is a pretty color red! How long do they bloom for? 🍂🌾🍂

  3. Much accomplished & looking great. I planted cosmos seeds for the first time this year & they did have lovely flowers but didn’t bloom at the same time or color. One was so tall with no flowers I almost pulled it & then it was covered. Their definitely different. Misfit section looking great

  4. Hi Nicole, I’m amazed at your strength and endurance in creating your beautiful landscape. You can be proud of all that you have accomplished. One day it will be what you’re dreaming it to be.
    🫶🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️

  5. Probably keep the agave in the pot and wild guess the red blooming plant you received from your sister is crocosmia? 🤔

  6. Great days work! Many, many days when I garden I get hotter, sweatier, dirtier, and less accomplished than I had anticipated. In the end, if I’ve managed to achieve even a few of my goals I try to call it a win. I like your closing remarks about leaving the world with a little more beauty. That’s a big deal, and you’ve surely done that today in your garden! Looking forward to more of your videos.

  10. Hi Nicole, So glad you did a video on the "misfit" island, you have done such a fantastic job on the front and back yard, especially the secret garden. I had been wondering about the outside fence area because the vehicles passing by do not get to see the beautiful back yard but do see the fence area and it is starting to really take shape. I know you have great ideas of what you want, and the end result will surely be amazing.🌺😍🌺
