Years ago I had a landscaper xeriscape the whole front yard. They installed weed fabric and put down mulch in some parts with a few plants and rocks along the walkways. As you can imagine, it didn’t take long for pioneer plants to pop up everywhere and after some longer term travel it’s unmanageable (I don’t want to use herbicide).
I want to redo the front and plant some native ground cover instead of mulch. My big question is, I like having the rocks along the walkways and driveways because it prevents me from needing to trim along the driveway and keeps the plants a bit further back.
If I’m to redo this what will give it more staying power without the need to constantly weed? Should I put down crushed granite or the equivalent and pack it down beneath these rocks? Other ideas?

I just pour hot water over weeds growing in my rocks and mulch, if it’s an area where I don’t want anything growing. For a large area, you can bring an electric kettle outside on an extension cord.
