Up to you but I would want to leave some access or a foot path. That way you don’t have to trudge through your bed to get towards the back.

Not at all! I think it would look lovely.

How much of this is in shade how much of the time? How much gets full sun? How much foot traffic is expected in here? How often are you planning to cut things down?
Making the full thing a space for pollinators is great, but you’ll need to figure out if it’ll be stepped on, and then what can grow there. How much maintenance it’s going to need should factor in as well as watering (sprinkler system back there already?)
I personally love the idea as we’re not a huge fan of grass at our house, but ymmv. 😀

I don’t think so. I’d plant flowering shrubs like Cenizo, Desert Globemallow, Esperanza, Flame Acanthus, Black Dalea, Rock Rose, the list goes on. I love wildflowers, but they’ll be brown and dry from July onwards.
I’d also wind the shrubs around so you can create a small walking path. The path can just be decomposed granite, the grass you have already, or maybe some flagstones.
