    @THERUSTEDGARDEN

  3. I have watering burnout. Not sure about you but in my backyard we haven't had meaningful rainful in over 6 weeks. I have to water the landscaping around the house it's gotten so bad.

  4. I downsized my garden to a fraction of what it was and I don’t regret it. It took too much of my time. I didn’t enjoy it anymore. The daily watering in 100 degree temps and fertilizing really got to me.

  5. Mmm… peppers. I’m keeping mine until frost kills them. I core them, dice them, and freeze them. If I am short of freezer space, I have a dehydrator. It is another great way of preserving them. I have about a hundred pounds of tomatoes in my freezers and at least thirty pounds of diced peppers, waiting for cooler weather before I process them to make salsa, tomato sauce, and tomato soup.

    The rattlesnake bite is looking a lot better, and is starting to itch. I have to make sure I am wearing long pants when I let the chickens out, or they will try to eat me. Don’t ask how I know. Hell, they’d rather take a chunk out of me, than eat pepper cores.

    I had one issue with the fall garden, my Dutch Cabbage. First, they were attacked by flea beetles. A little dust took care of them. Then they started yellowing and looked sick. Better to replace them, than try nursing them back to health. They didn’t respond to liquid plant food. I pulled them, and examined the roots. They showed signs of new growth, but were in poor condition. They weren’t in good enough condition to feed to the chickens, so into the compost bin they went.

    The replacement plants had mega root growth. They didn’t have the least bit of transfer shock, and are doing great, so is everything else, parsnips, Danvers carrots, Detroit Dark Red Beets, Purple Top Turnips, red cabbage, Komatsuna, Rainbow Swiss Chard, Tatsoi, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, Nappa Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and Pak Choy. That is enough to keep me busy.

  6. We’re downsizing next year. 6 Roma and 5 big boy was just too much for a couple. We gave 75% of our entire vegetable harvest away which we enjoyed. That’s after we stocked the pantry to get us till next year. My advice is grow what you consume. I love jalapeño and bell peppers but we don’t consume enough to make it worth the time. I can’t eat 20 bell peppers a week. Much like potatoes or onion. It’s just easier to buy as needed and both of those are cheap at the store. I had 8 cucumber plants we eat cucumbers maybe twice a week 😂.. If I could only plant one vegetable it would be tomatoes. It’s the only vegetable that you can buy from the store that has no taste. I’ve grown everything but it’s ultimately about consumption. Grow to your needs.

  7. I took out two roma plants for space just like you did. I spent so much time picking the green tomatoes out of it and I'm not really sure why since I already have enough to last us until we grow more next year. But there I was, scrutinizing every single tomato individually, picking and choosing the best ones to keep anyway. And then, of course, I lose all energy or motivation for anything else at that point.

    So yeah, sometimes it's best to just yank it up and compost the whole thing and don't worry about it any longer. No big deal.

    Why is it so hard to throw plants awayyyyyyyyy

  8. Thank you I needed to hear this and that it was OK to get rid of stuff. And it definitely seems like it would be easier to deal with one little bit at a time instead of looking at it as a whole, which just runs me back in the house.

  9. SO wanted. SO needed. I did some pruning & collecting today (with peppers & cucumbers specifically) and then planted more potatoes after weeding. Tomorrow I WILL start prepping my pots for cooler weather crops. Just doing a little each day, after picking the task that is do-able makes it not feel insurmountable. Thank you for the encouragement to continue.

  10. Just ripped some things out today and it felt great. Now I am excited to find ways to use green tomatoes! I found a dessert pie that I’m going to make tomorrow and some chutneys, etc. I want to dehydrate a bunch of cherry tomatoes to make a tasty snack as well.

  11. Your garden is always so amazing and peaceful. I agree with you, do a bit each day. Well eventually get it taken care of..
    This fall, we reduced down by half. The rest once its taken out, will get compost and leaves put down The full garden will be back next summer. I plan to take your advice and tuck some fall plants under summer plants to shade and get them started . Thanks for a great video

  12. What helped me fight burnout was keeping a spreadsheet of every penny put into my garden this season, and weighing all the harvest and giving it a value equal to what I would have spent at the grocery store. I've never done this, but finding out that I am now $2,369 worth of free food above the total garden cost has erased the burnout feeling. Because now I don't feel guilty for feeling burned out. I know I did great and don't have to worry about keeping old crops alive just because. I don't mind trashing old plants with fruit on them now. I don't mind not planting much of a winter garden now. It's truly a game changer.

  13. Thank you. It's been one hell of a season here between the cold, the heat, the water restrictions, and the hail and I've pretty much given up. It's supposed to frost tonight anyways so I can clean and plan for next year.
