Thanks for growing with us!

Today we are installing a complete front garden makeover. Our friends have recently renovated their front porch of their home in in Saratoga Springs, NY and asked us to design a garden that would be low maintenance and give four seasons of interest. Eric put together a collection of shrubs that would mix colors, textures, and bloom times to make this front yard have instant curb appeal. We are sharing the process from start to finish.

The first step in the process is to determine what kind of light situation we are working with. In this case there is morning sun and afternoon sun, providing a nice amount of part sun. We also know that the house is rented in the summer so we want to make sure the garden looks good in the other three seasons so our friends can enjoy it.

We use the Root Slayer Edger to define the new planting space

In the planting holes we are adding Scoodic Blend Compost from @Coastofmaine to give organic matter that will help feed the soil and give the plants a boost.

See the link above for our absolute favorite mulch tool.

  1. Oh my GOSH! Your choice are PERFECT! They're SO beautiful together. I have to buy a house with a LARGE yard so that I can mimic all your plantings.

  2. Great plant selection and layout. What a fun transformation. Did your friends give you a budget or did you have free rein? I can’t believe how expensive plants have gotten over the past several years, I’m having to do projects in small stages.

  3. I'm only 5 minutes into the video & I'm jumping up & down with happiness! We do the same thing, we rent our house in the summer months and that is why I have to have a garden that can survive without me (sometimes for 2 months). Beautiful choices you guys implemented! I love how the colors of the shrubs pick up the color of the door.

  4. Another great garden! Love the Diervilla and will be looking at those for a new project next spring. Already planning for Spring 2025(zone 5b/6a NH). Thanks for the beautiful inspiration!

  5. Love this design, and it always makes me smile when you use the Coast of Maine products… I'm moving from Zone 8a Dallas area to Zone 5b Maine (near Penobscot Bay) next spring, so those names are all familiar to me, and I'm planning to use your designs as a jumping off point for my new garden.

  6. This episode was really good. So enjoyed seeing a front yard come to life, and using only shrubs and one tree. Congratulations on a great plan and a job well done. You guys are adorable.

  7. Wow! I absolutely love, love, love, your plant choices and placement. You guys are very talented. Thank you for taking us along and for explaining all your design choices.

  8. Love love love your selections! The porch remodel is beautiful. Will they paint the wood or leave as is? My dad’s firelight tidbits really got huge this year. We have to measure but probably 4×4. Perhaps the growth was due to a very wet spring. The summer has been so dry. This was their 3rd season.

  9. Your friends did a gorgeous job with the renovation of the facade of the house! So pretty! And then your shrub and tree choices and garden bed layout is the icing on the cake. Your taste is impeccable! Well done gentlemen. Looking forward to more projects. 💕🌲🌳🌸

  10. Hey! Did you get the plants at Gurnsey's, the place I told you both about earlier? I grew up in Scotia & Ballston Spa & my parents ONLY bought their trees & shrubs there. I finally visited Faddegon's as you recommended. What a great garden center! Can't believe I never visited before this year. Love this project & your channel!

  11. Wow what a transformation so beautiful love all the selections you chose great job Christopher and Eric and thank you to Brandon and Cole for sharing your beautiful garden. Great job keep coming love your channel. Love from Washington State 👍🙏😊❤️

  12. Watching this video makes me so happy! I love your design….it’s an absolutely gorgeous landscaping project! And the plants you picked out are so outstanding! Excellent job!❤❤❤

  13. What a beautiful job! I’m still struggling with my front beds. So many choices and directions it can go. It’s so hard to choose, so I can really appreciate how much time it must have taken you to come up with this beautiful plan.
Hoping for a progress update on this in the years to come.

  14. I wish you were able to do my front of house area. It is so dated and ready for change. You do wonderful work with taste beyond compare. Thank you for sharing.❤❤❤❤

  15. Me encantó el vídeo. De verdad que son unos expertos en jardinería. El diseño y la selección de las plantas estupendos y el cambio en el patio ha sido muy notable.

  16. That was awesome, and shows how to layer and combine 4 season interest. Love how you both compliment and encourage each other’s work…keep making videos guys!

  17. When are you both going to give up your day jobs, and start garden designing on a full time basis? You definitely have the creative skills for it!! Loved watching the transformation, along with the detailed explanations of each plant. Your friends are two lucky guys!!!!
