Yes, it reminds me of the "kitchen hack" of regrowing lettuce and such in jars of water. Its more work than growing the food in soil and produces less nutrition
having an irrigation system to water them would have been a better idea than using a watering can, also you can add plant food into the water providing on the setup or the irrigator being used. I might try growing strawberries this way or some other fruit or veg.
You've got a very valid point. With all these weird hacks viruling about in social media it is easy to get distracted from the meat and potatoes of growing food for yourself
I think the big commercial versions of this use long hanging beds. This allows them to fill the space completely with strawberries and when you need to inspect or pick/inspect you hoist up a bed so that it's over your head to provide a path and the ones you're picking are at chest height for ergonomics.
Strawberries are the ONLY crop that I am willing to use plastic to grow. Planting them into landscaping fabric to prevent weeds and prevent fruit rotting is unbeatable. Still will have major pest problems, but that is kinda unavoidable with strawberries.

Russians call this "tragedy of intellect". Basically, this is being smarter than you are wise. But that's how you get wisdom, so it's all good
