Very timely! I also planted a few pumpkins and winter squash. In addition to butternut squash. I scattered the pumpkins here and there. Well I have observed exactly what you have. This is the most fun time of year when you start finding pumpkins all over the place. here’s my question when the origin of the plant the old original vine is all Dry looking and cracked open looking and you can even see the bugs inside the vine. Is it OK to remove that because all the routing that has taken place along the rest of the vine?
At this time of year, we get a little anxious to get some of the junk out and in one case I did that and the rest of the vine died so it must not have been as rooted as I thought it was . So do you leave a terrible looking old original vine?
And then I don’t see any powdery mildew. What’s your favorite trick for that? Thank you for your information and I think growing pumpkins and vines is very satisfying. Oh one last thing why do you alternate butternut squash years?
My neighbors are cooking leaves off a very similar plant, leaves are identical but its squash not pumpkin. Must of been in compost because its definitely a volunteer ,taking over front yard, decided to let it grow when i first noticed, out of curiosity, now its huge bearing many squash, but leaves are identical to yours, only not pumpkin. The vines are literally wrapped around rosebush branches, i will save seed to grow again in an intentional area, the leaves are lovely to see as well as edible.
Good morning! Amazing plant, so strong! I agree with the spiderwebs. I walked right into one a couple days ago, and it was even in my mouth not good, lol
Looks just like my Rampicante squash this year! We have to let nature teach us 🙂
Seminole are amazing, native species..
Solid , not hollow vines protect against the squash vine borer (and your foot, lol).
They root along the nodes also, so bury an inch or so and cover with compost every few feet.
This will allow it to regenerate if something happens to the main plant.
Squash bugs aren't too bad on them either.
The fruits keep at least a year for me if properly cured.
I grow them and South Anna butternut, which is a butternut/seminole cross with the same solid vine.
Some call these Cherokee tan pumpkins if you want to search for that name, too.
Fabulous looking garden you have.
I had a plant do that, didn’t know what it was- but was hoping winter squash or watermelon—- it was decorator gourds🤣 so I have about 100 small gourds.
My plants are doing the same. The trellised pumpkin🎃 plants are not doing well but the plants I let grow on the ground are growing out of
control.
Good job my friend.
Do you ever dream about being strangled by a vining plant 😂. In all seriousness though, how great to have a priority crop so healthy. It's beautiful.
I had all vines and fruit with any of my long vining plants
Let them crawl on the ground, they can send more roots out for more nutrients. I like to cover the vines every few feet at a node or two to help them thrive and spread. Excellent ground cover.
Great info!!
My Butternut Squash rooted everywhere. The vine borers killed the main stem but it`s still making squash from the parts that rooted. So one plant became several.
