Watch our other maple videos for additional pruning tips! They’re located in our “Out In The Field” playlist.

This type of pruning is known as Niwaki in Japan. This art form is to showcase the natural beauty of the maple trunks/branches. Some people prefer the bushy umbrella style that showcases more leaves and that’s perfectly fine. We want to show this style of pruning that is not as commonly seen here in the Seattle area. Maples naturally have wonderful twists and turns. Watch and learn and see how Robert, Nolan, and Lily reveal the structure of this 20+ year old tree.

  1. Great video! I see a lot of Japanese maples around me especially the weeping or lace leaf one's that could use this type of pruning. I've done a couple myself and it can get overwhelming! Nice job dudes 👍

  2. Please ignore trolls. They are useless stinging mosquitoes. Most of us understand your skills are an art form! Bravo!

  3. I’m glad Mama got involved in the pruning—the maple tree branches look like a work of art now! I love how the pruning made their beauty stand out.
